When the Deltarune Chapter 2 release date was announced, a price wasn’t set and people were uncertain if it would be free like the first chapter. Now that it is available, creator Toby Fox announced that it doesn’t cost any money to download and play. However, the full five chapter game will require people to pay to play it. Fox noted, “I don’t know the price yet, but it’s definitely going to cost more than Undertale.” For sake of reference, Undertale costs $9.99.

Fox offered an explanation for why no price was set for Deltarune Chapter 2 and it is free. In general, it is something of a kindness. Here’s the full explanation from the official site.

Hi everyone.

The world has been really tough for everybody recently.

So I decided to release Deltarune Chapter 2 for free.

I guess like a pet cat that drops bugs at your doorstep.

I can, with some pride, show you the weird things I’ve been doing.

I’m not sure if it will help, but I hope so.

(Just one request—please remember games like this aren’t normally free. If you can afford it, spend the money you saved from getting this game for free by supporting other indie devs.

If you really want to give me money, buy the soundtrack from Bandcamp. Thank you.)

As for what’s next, Fox noted the goal is to release Deltarune Chapters 3-5 next time. At that point, people will be able to pay to get the whole game. However, there is no release window for it yet.

Fox also took to Twitter to discuss issues with Deltarune Chapter 2 crashes. Apparently, people using peripherals might see this happen. While a hotfix is in place, Fox also recommended restarting and removing any gamepads.

Deltarune Chapter 2 is available now for free on PCs. There’s no release date for chapters 3-5.
