No other console manufacturer has hit the ball out of the park with startup sounds more than Sony. From the OG PlayStation to the PS5, there are so many memorable little jingles that Sony has provided over the years, which each perfectly encapsulated the era of the console they represented.

But which PlayStation startup sound was the best?

Let us know in the comments below and, as always, we’ll feature our favorite replies in the next Readers’ Opinion.

Our opinion

Paul writes… I love how each PlayStation startup sound transports you back to a different time, but this also means that nostalgia definitely clouds my vision when it comes to the best PlayStation startup sound. I have vivid memories of the booming throb of the OG PlayStation sound before it booted up Crash Bandicoot 2/Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater/Ape Escape, or the sci-fi soundscape that is the PS2’s startup. The PS3’s little orchestral number is nice, but the PS4 and PS5 sounds are a little forgettable compared to the rest.

I’m going to have to go with the original PlayStation’s startup just because of how much it felt like it was the start of something we hadn’t seen in video games before. The Nintendo 64 didn’t even have a startup sound, just booting you directly into the game after you’d inserted the cartridge and turned the power on. PlayStation felt powerful in a way that a console had never felt before — it felt like the first video game console that wasn’t a toy.

And in the comments section, Adam replied:

I think it’s good getting them away from square, but bad for getting into hands of a holding company that most haven’t even heard of before. if they were known for doing good things they wouldn’t be unknown. That doesn’t mean they are bad either but it is definitely not as fun as if microsoft or sony had picked up the studios.
