The original 2017 release of Slime Rancher may very well be the definition of ‘cult classic’: from humble beginnings, sprouting many devoted fans across the internet, developers Monomi Park are now ready to take the next step into the mainstream with Slime Rancher 2.
And with the sequel releasing today onto Xbox Game Pass for Xbox Series X|S users, and also hopping onto PC, you too can make your dreams of farming balls of slime a reality. Once again, this all takes place in the shoes of esteemed farmer Beatrix LeBeau, however this time she is setting up shop in Rainbow Island, a colourful land full to the brim with slimes and secrets aplenty.
Much like the first instalment into the series, Slime Rancher 2 sees you given free reign over a bustling open world, packed with different types of cutesy slimes to vacuum up, and deposit into an ever-expanding farm. As you make your way through the island, you’ll discover ancient technologies and secrets that can be used to upgrade your harvesting equipment, as well as engineer new gadgets to both aid in sucking up slimes, but also protecting yourself against potential hazards in your path.
There are, of course, brand new slimes to chuck into your conservatory this time around, from the cotton slime and all its bounciness, to the angler slime, which depends upon an aquatic environment. The true challenge of Slime Rancher 2 is to build compartments of your farm to suit different slime types, and prevent any slippery escapes! Think of Viva Pinata, in that its a constant plate-spinning act to produce the best farm possible.
Slime Rancher 2 is now available for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Unfortunately, this one is strictly a new-gen release – sorry Xbox One players! The game is also available for free for those with Xbox Game Pass; otherwise a copy of the game will cost £24.99 via the Xbox Store.
